Naples - Guided tour of the Chapel and the Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro
It was in 1305 that Charles of Anjou, to celebrate the 1000th death anniversary of the saint, donated the gold and silver bust-cum-reliquary of St. Januarius after employing the best goldsmiths in the province to work on it. The work was so impressive that it inspired a legacy of goldsmithing in the area.
You will find statues of important saints in the chapel, out of which 19 are full-figure sculptures made out of bronze. The statues also have corresponding reliquary busts that contain relics from the same saints. There are 54 reliquary busts in total.
The collection of silverware in this chapel is said to be one of the largest in the world.. Don’t miss the chance to view the giant candelabra in front of the high altar that weighs a hefty 150kgs. Alongside this are 2000 ducats donated by the aristocracy of the Bourbon dynasty.
The porphyry high altar is a baroque masterpiece that is etched with scenes from the saint's life, biblical messages, and the return of the saint's bones to the church. The altar features reliefs and sculptures of St. Januaius looking down on the faithful as birds fly above him.
Hidden behind the frontal altar are silver doors and a red drape that hides the strongbox containing the vials of St. Januarius blood. So precious is this relic, that two keys are required to open it. One is held with the Deputation and the other with the Archbishop of Naples.
The chapel is open from Monday to Saturday from 8.30 AM to 1 PM and again from 2.30 PM to 6 PM. On Sundays 8.30 AM to 1 PM and 4.30 PM to 7.30 PM.
